Prof James Goodwin
Chief Science Officer, Advisor, Author, Speaker
Professor James Goodwin is an an authoritative leader in ageing and brain health, an expert in medical science communication, and in assessing research impact, having developed methodology to assess the research impact of all UK universities for the HEFCE (a UK Government body) in 2014, 2021 and upcoming in 2028.
Prof Goodwin is the author of the global best-selling book Supercharge Your Brain, translated into 8 major languages. He is Visiting Professor in the physiology of ageing at Loughborough University and Honorary Professor at the University of Exeter Medical School where he teaches Medical Humanities to final year medical students. He was Distinguished Speaker at USF, Tampa, and advisor to research projects in Heidelberg University, the Leyden Academy, Netherlands and Lund University, Sweden
Currently, he serves as Director of Science and Research Impact at the Brain Health Network in London. He was a founding member of the Global Council on Brain Health, Washington DC- a collaborative between AARP and Age UK, and Expert Advisory Board Member for the Optum Labs (USA) dementia prediction project.
Previously, as Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at Age UK until 2018, he directed research funding, collaborated with universities and influenced the policy of governments and international organisations, including the now global Age Friendly Cities movement, working with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Public Health Agency of Canada. Dr Goodwin has been an advisor and member of numerous expert bodies, including a UK Ministerial Advisory Group on Dementia Research, the UN Research Agenda for Ageing panel, a UN Digital Health Group, at the WHO, the EC funded FUTURAGE project and in 2022, concluded a 5-year spell as advisor to HEATSHIELD, the EU's premier climate change research programme.
Dr Goodwin graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Keele University, UK and a Master’s in Human Biology at Loughborough, followed by a PhD in Medical Physiology at the University of Exeter Medical School.
In 2014, Dr Goodwin was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS) for his contribution to the impact of research on important social issues affecting older people. He has a proven track record in ‘research impact’ with many appointments on official bodies, including the French Government’s research agency where James specialized in research impact.
James is a sought-after speaker on the global stage with appearances at the UN, the WHO, and many corporations including Unilever, Merck, Samsung, Sanofi Pasteur, the IoD Monaco and an array of universities across the world. In the last two years alone, he has had more than 150 media appearances including the BBC, Sky, GB News, UK Health Radio, NPR (USA), the Times, the Telegraph, The i and Vogue, Vanity Fair, Country and Town House, Top Santé and the New Scientist. He has been engaged as medical science consultant to Plimsoll Productions (UK and LA) who are currently producing a documentary on brain health.
James is a 21-year Army veteran and graduate of Britain’s prestigious Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.
