Kathleen Doherty
Chief Strategy Officer, Former US Ambassador
Kathleen, a highly decorated former career diplomat and former U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus, is the Chief Strategy and Retreats Officer of The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands.
She convenes experts from around the globe for high-impact retreats to address global challenges, diplomatic and societal issues. Recent events included a gathering that reunited luminaries of the civil rights movement and high-level meetings on the future of food systems. Kathleen is in charge of the strategy, design and execution of the retreats and manages the brand strategy and communications.
Immediately prior, Kathleen was a Dean at the Foreign Service Institute, the nation's premier training facility for U.S. diplomats. From 2015 to 2019, she served as the U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus, advising the U.S. Vice President and Cabinet Secretaries on U.S. policy towards Cyprus. She initiated a full-scale re-design of U.S. strategic engagement with Cyprus and played a fundamental role in a U.S. company's successful gas license bid.
During her diplomatic career, Kathleen received fifteen State Department awards whilst working in Rome, Moscow, London, Sao Paulo, Santo Domingo, and Washington, D.C. She speaks Italian, and some Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian.
She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute.
Kathleen is an innovator, connector and negotiator; a skilled manager of change, conflict, crisis and risk, and a builder of strategic partnerships. She has particular expertise in global financial policies and oil and gas issues, especially related to geo-politics. She has keynoted many of The Economist’s conferences, and has done other media appearances, including live television in Italian and Spanish.
She holds an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and a B.A. from Colgate University. She completed a certificate in security studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Kathleen has travelled to more than 60 countries, trekked in Nepal, ran several half marathons, is a pescatarian foodie, and a big baseball fan.
